
Using D3.js with Frontend Frameworks
Let Each Tool Do What It Does Best

Using a visualization library inside a frontend framework is common. But if you work with D3.js, you’ve probably come across discussions about the pros and cons of combining the two.
Frameworks solve many problems that a visualization library would otherwise need to handle. This overlap creates an important question: who should control the DOM?
Frameworks are designed to manage state, rendering, and component lifecycles. D3, on the other hand, excels at transforming data into visual representations. When both tools want to manipulate the DOM, conflicts are almost inevitable.
Three Ways Frameworks and Visualization Libraries Can Work Together
The question is simple: who controls the DOM?
1. The Visualization Library Controls the DOM
One option is to let D3 handle everything. This approach works, but it means giving up some of the framework’s strengths.
For example, if D3 controls rendering, you lose much of the framework’s state management and lifecycle capabilities. At that point, you have to recreate some of those mechanisms yourself.
2. The Framework Controls the DOM
Another approach is to use D3 primarily as a utility library.
The framework handles rendering, state management, and user interactions, while D3 provides scales, shape generators, and other data transformation tools. This allows each tool to focus on what it does best.
3. A Hybrid Approach
In practice, many applications end up somewhere in between.
Let the framework manage as much as possible, and use D3 for direct DOM manipulation only when it provides a clear benefit. This usually results in cleaner code and fewer surprises.
Why Frameworks Are Worth Using
Frameworks solve many problems that applications naturally grow into:
- They encourage reusable components.
- They help organize complexity.
- They help separating complex chart-specific components from simple reusable ones.
- They provide state management.
- They take care of rendering and lifecycle management.
- They reduce boilerplate.
- They often simplify interactions.
Pure D3 may offer better performance, but maintainability and readability usually matter more over the lifetime of a project.
Connecting a Visualization Library with a Framework
If the framework owns the DOM, some of D3’s traditional features become less attractive.
Features such as data binding, axis generation, and event handling overlap with responsibilities already handled by the framework. Using both approaches simultaneously often creates problems.
Fortunately, many parts of D3 are independent of the DOM and fit naturally into a framework-based architecture. Scales, shape generators, layouts, and data utilities can all be used without issue.
In other words, some responsibilities shift from D3 to the framework while preserving D3’s strengths.
If you’re using a higher-level library such as Highcharts, integration is usually simpler. Many libraries provide wrappers for frameworks like React, Vue, and Angular.
These wrappers act as a bridge between the framework and the visualization library, so you rarely need to worry about separation of concerns.
Before choosing one, check whether the wrapper is actively maintained and supports the versions you need.
A State Management Experiment
State management is one of the strongest arguments for using a framework.
Take Vue as an example. With the directive v-model (two-way data binding), changes automatically propagate through the application, and only the necessary components are updated.
You could implement similar behavior in D3 with event callbacks. If multiple elements change, you would need multiple callbacks. Each callback must update all other dependent values, since you don’t always know what else changes. This quickly increases complexity and leads to more code. You can slightly optimize this, but it can still lead to unnecessary updates and extra code.
At that point, D3 is doing a job it wasn’t designed for. State management is clearly not a visualization library’s primary concern.
The result is more boilerplate and code that becomes harder to understand and maintain.
Let Each Tool Play to Its Strengths
Software systems tend to work best when responsibilities are aligned with strengths.
Frameworks are built to solve problems common to most applications: state, rendering, and lifecycle management.
Visualization libraries are built for transforming data and representing it visually.
Instead of forcing one tool to do everything, let each one focus on what it was designed for. That usually leads to simpler code, clearer architecture, and fewer headaches down the road.
